This past month I decided to visit and research as many film festivals as humanly possible; a very educational yet silly time-management activity.

One of the many festivals on the list was The TriBeCa Film Festival (April 18th-19th, 2012). While I obviously couldn’t attend every event during the ten-day affair I was fortunate enough to view a few screenings and panels. To my surprise the most valuable and educational portion of the festival wasn’t a film, but rather a talk series on Film Funding and Digital Data. This event featured Andrew Weissman (Partner at Union Square Ventures), Jason Hirschorn (MGM Board and MTV Digital), James Lawler (CEO of Constellation), and David Larkin (CEO of Go Watch It).

Here are my Ten Things Taken from TriBeCa:

1. Online screening is becoming more lucrative and relevant – skip the theater event
2. Successful branding=Successful film
3. Audiences need to feel involved before release – Twitter, Facebook, Events
4. It’s all a trick. The industry needs to think you’re important before you are.
5. Piracy is beneficial to a Filmmaker noob. Exposure is exposure. All POV.
6. The best writers are developing conversations with their audience during production.
7. One doesn’t have to come from money to make a movie. Hosts like Kickstarter serve as wonderful platforms. Pennies=dollar=funding=film
8. Without social media relevance a filmmaker doesn’t exist. Utilize Klout
9. A person’s greatest asset isn’t their resume – it’s charisma and drive.
10. “Rest in Peace DVD” – Google it and watch it.

TriBeCa served as both a creative and educational outlet. With more knowledge now in BTEFF’s pockets we can’t wait to get rolling and bring you our best festival to date. #FilmExposed
